Some information about Luquillo Luquillo is a beach town on the Northeast coast of Puerto Rico, Called La Capital del Sol or La Riviera de Puerto Rico Luquillos' greatest assets are its' varied, beautiful beaches and its' easy access to San Juan and the rainforest. Balneario Luquillo "La monserate" is a calm crescent shaped beach lined with coconut trees. Playa Azul beach has a small surf. The 'point' is protected and offers good snorkeling (sometimes in the winter there is too much current but that's rare) and 'La Pared' offers good surfing waves. (Medium range). El Yunque Rainforest just five minutes away from the house The El Yunque Rainforest is a cool, mountainous, semi tropical rain forest in eastern Puerto Rico. The abundant rainfall is shed through rocky rivers creating many cascades of waterfalls and pools. At the higher elevations the waters are clean enough to drink and delightful to swim in. Bring your bathing suit! The forest hosts a number of unique plant and animal species such as the endangered Puerto Rican Parrot and the tiny coquis (indigenous tree frogs) that serenade the evening hours. Discover the exotic vegetation of El Yunque, the only tropical rain forest in the U.S. National Forest System. It features over 240 species of plants and wildlife, waterfalls, streams and hiking trails leading to enticing locations. From the observation point, which stands 3,526 feet above sea level, you can enjoy the unique mesmerizing view of the entire northeast coast of the island. The reflection of this magical forest highlights the intense blue of Luquillo Beach's tranquil waters and its golden sand. El Yunque is managed by the US Forest Service who maintain an extensive network of hiking trails. Picnic facilities, paved trails and tour bus parking, the 'El Portal' exhibit hall and lookout towers are on the North side. The South side is the quiet side. A list of nearby activities: hiking, kayaking and sailing tours. El Yunque is part of the Luquillo range and is divided into four forest: Tabonuco Forest, Palo Colorado Forest, Palma Sierra Forest and En Las Nubes Forest. Fajardo Fajardo is
one of the most originally beautiful spots on the island's shores. Las Cabezas de San Juan in Fajardo is one of the most important natural areas in Puerto Rico. Las Cabezas, which means "headlands," refer to 3 promontories that extend into the Atlantic Ocean. Impressive representation of seven different ecological systems including coral reefs, beaches, lagoons, mangroves and dry forest within its 316 acres/128 hectares. The preserve is home to many endangered species. Off shore near Fajardo few islets can be found: Icacos, Palominos, Palominitos and Diablo, uninhabited coral islands. |
